Drivers Face $75 Ticket if Failing to Move Over from the Passing Lane
Slow
drivers in the left lane impede traffic and risk the safety of other
drivers. As the issue escalates, politicians in Georgia seek a
solution.
"I don't think I'm alone in thinking this: There are so many times when
you're on the Interstate ... and people will get in the over in the
left-hand lane, which by law is for passing, and just sit there using
it as their own personal driving lane," said sponsor Rep. Mark Butler,
R-Carrollton. "They may be going 50 mph, and it ends up slowing down
traffic. It's frustrating."
Drivers who hog the fast lane and refuse to yield to faster vehicles
could get a $75 fine under legislation currently being considered.
The law that is being considered requires slower drivers to move over
as soon as they notice they're being overtaken by a faster vehicle.
Troopers will consider the situation prior to issuing tickets.

"It's
pretty much a trooper's discretion of what they see during a
routine patrol," said Public Safety's spokesman Gordy Wright.
Tailgating does not solve the problem. In Colorado, tailgating will
cost you four points on your license. Drivers are better off reminding
other drivers of the speed limit in a courteous manner."
